SomaScribe Privacy Policy

Last updated: September 8, 2026

SomaScribe (“SomaScribe,” “the Extension,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) is a free Google Chrome extension developed by Nyota Health that helps expectant and new parents research maternal health information more safely and comfortably. This Privacy Policy describes what data the Extension handles, where it is stored, how it is used, and the choices you have.

The short version

  • Everything you log — symptoms, mood, water intake, kicks, feeds, appointments, trigger keywords, and milestone — is stored only on your device using Chrome’s storage.local API.
  • We do not sell, share, or trade your data.
  • We do not use advertising or third-party analytics inside the Extension.
  • Cloud backup is off by default and only sends data if you turn it on and provide a sync endpoint you control.
  • A single button (Settings → Delete all my data) erases everything the Extension has stored on your device.

1. Data We Handle

The Extension handles the following data, all stored locally on your device unless you explicitly enable optional cloud backup:

DataWhere it livesPurpose
Milestone, weeks alongchrome.storage.localPersonalize the sidebar
Symptoms, mood, water, kicks, feedschrome.storage.localShow your own history
Appointmentschrome.storage.localReminders + Google Calendar export
Hospital-bag checklistchrome.storage.localPersonal to-do list
Trigger keywordschrome.storage.localClient-side content blur
Extension preferenceschrome.storage.localRemember your settings
Anonymous UUIDchrome.storage.localUsed only if you opt into cloud sync
Pro sign-in tokenchrome.storage.localKeeps you signed in for Pro features
Ad-tracker block rulesBundled with the ExtensionBlocks known ad networks via declarativeNetRequest

2. In-Page Features (Processed Locally)

On pages you visit, the Extension highlights medications and foods with safety pills, translates medical jargon when you select a term, and softly blurs articles containing your chosen trigger keywords. This page text and image analysis runs entirely inside your browser and is not transmitted to our servers.

3. Pro Features — Summarize and Credibility

If you are a signed-in Pro user and you actively click Summarize this page orCredibility, the Extension sends the article URL and title of the tab you are viewing to our backend so we can return a structured summary or credibility rating. The full page text is processed locally; only the URL and title are sent, and only after your explicit click. This never happens automatically or for non-Pro users.

4. Optional Cloud Backup

If (and only if) you toggle Enable cloud backup and enter a sync endpoint URL, the Extension will POST a JSON snapshot of the locally stored data above to that URL, keyed by the anonymous UUID. Nothing is sent unless you enable this. You can turn it off or delete the snapshot at any time. The sync endpoint is one you choose and control; we do not operate it by default.

5. Ad-Tracker Blocking

The Extension blocks a bundled, static list of ad-tracker and analytics domains (~40 rules shipped inside the package) using Chrome’sdeclarativeNetRequest API, so your pregnancy searches are not followed around the web by third-party advertisers. The rules are fixed and shipped with the Extension — nothing dynamic is fetched.

6. Local Reminders and Notifications

The Extension uses Chrome’s alarms and notifications APIs to show optional, locally generated hydration reminders and a weekly digest of your logs. These reminders are generated on your device from chrome.storage.localand do not contact any server. An optional text-to-speech feature (tts) reads jargon definitions aloud and is also entirely local.

7. Permissions We Use

  • storage — save your milestone, logs, keywords, preferences, and Pro token locally.
  • activeTab — read the active tab’s article text only after you click Summarize this page.
  • scripting — inject the safety pills and jargon tooltips into pages you read; no remote scripts are ever injected.
  • declarativeNetRequest — block the bundled ad-tracker domain list.
  • sidePanel — show the SomaScribe sidebar beside the page.
  • alarms — fire local hydration and weekly-digest reminders.
  • notifications — display those local reminders as Chrome notifications.
  • tts — read jargon definitions aloud (off by default).
  • host permissions — inject on-page features on any article you choose to read; page text is processed locally and never sent.

8. What We Never Do

  • We never send your browsing history to any server.
  • We never track you across sites.
  • We never sell, share, or trade your data with anyone.
  • We never use your data for creditworthiness or lending purposes.
  • We never use your data for purposes unrelated to SomaScribe’s single purpose.
  • We never load remote executable code — 100% of the Extension’s code is bundled in the package.

9. Data Retention and Deletion

Locally stored data remains on your device until you delete it. UseSettings → Delete all my data inside the Extension to erase everything immediately. Uninstalling the Extension also removes the locally stored data. If you enabled cloud backup, deleting your data in Settings also removes the snapshot from your sync endpoint.

10. Third-Party Services

SomaScribe is distributed through the Google Chrome Web Store, which is governed by Google’s own privacy policy and terms. The one-click appointment export uses Google Calendar, which is governed by Google’s privacy policy. We do not share your data with third parties for advertising, marketing, or analytics.

11. Children’s Privacy

SomaScribe is intended for adults navigating pregnancy, postpartum, or trying to conceive, and is not directed to children under 18. We do not knowingly collect information from children. If you believe a child has provided information, please contact us and we will delete it.

12. Security

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards to protect information. Your logged data stays on your device under Chrome’s local storage protections. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, but we minimize what leaves your device by design.

13. Your Choices

  • Keep cloud backup off (the default) to keep all data on your device.
  • Edit your trigger-keyword list anytime in Settings.
  • Delete all locally stored data with one button in Settings.
  • Uninstall the Extension to remove its on-page features immediately.
  • Contact us to request access to or deletion of any contact information you gave us.

14. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be posted on this page with a revised “Last updated” date. Continued use of SomaScribe after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
